Interesting Places in Mauritius
Pampelmousses Garden - it is one of the most popular places in Mauritius. This botanical garden is recognized internationally thanks to its collection of local and exotic plants like huge Victoria Regia sea roses and numerous kinds of palms. Shady palms are very popular here and it is said that they blossom after 100 years just to die afterwards.
Plaine Champagne – it is the highest part of the Central Massive (about 740 meters) with a wonderful view on the Black River ravine and the sea in the distance. The ravine and the neighborhood constitute a national park in Mauritius. On the slopes overgrown with trees there are unusual kinds of local trees and the plants characteristic for the island. The neighborhood is also abundant in local birds- it is a paradise for bird observers.
Cap Malheureux – a symbol of the northern coast of Mauritius is a small red church, which is one of the favorite buildings photographed by tourists. There is a wonderful view on tree volcanic islands from here: Ile Ronde, Ile Plate and Coin de Mire.
„La Vanille” Crocodile Farm - next to Rivière des Anguilles, in the wild southern part of the island there is a farm with crocodiles brought from Madagascar. The farm spreads in a big park with walking paths, springs with clear water and bushy forest. In a small zoo visitors can see animals living in the island in their natural habitat.
Chamarel – it is a characteristic hilly area where the earth ridges of different colors contrast with each other. There is still no explanation for this geological phenomenon. In the neighborhood, there are other natural monuments- Chamarel waterfalls. The Chamarel town is a Creole mountain village with banana and pineapple plantation.
Grand Bassin – One of the natural lakes of the island, located in a crater of an extinct volcano, situated not far away from Mare aux Vacoas . It is mainly a pilgrimage destination for the local Hindu people.
Domaine les Pailles – it is a valley located south of Port Louis and its history dates back to the colonial period. A sugar factory and a herb garden were founded here.
Casela Bird Park - it is a paradise for those interested in birds and other animals. The park spreads in the Black River district on the area of 8 hectares and is a home to 2,500 birds out of 140 species. There are birds from 5 continents here. Nevertheless, the biggest attraction is the Mauritian Pink pigeon which is one of the rarest birds in the world. Other attractions are turtles, monkeys and tigers. Orchids, which blossom depending on the season, spreading trees, the sound of waterfalls result in the fact that it is an ideal and quiet place for a walk and relaxation from the bustle of well-known resorts in Mauritius.
Eureka (colonial House) - it is a very beautiful colonial house built in 1830, located in a charming park between the Moka Mountains and the waterfalls of the Moka River.
